Carlos Corberan remains in contact with Marcelo Bielsa after their time together at Leeds United.
Corberan worked as Bielsa’s assistant at Elland Road for two years and was part of the coaching staff that helped Leeds secure promotion to the Premier League in 2020.
However, it is from that moment that Corberan decided to take the leap of faith into management on his own, as he moved to Leeds‘ West Yorkshire neighbours Huddersfield Town.
Corberan is now at West Bromwich Albion and in a recent interview with the Daily Telegraph, he says he still speaks to Bielsa on a regular basis, describing their relationship as a ‘privilege’.
Though the Telegraph report Rafael Benitez was his idol following his time at Liverpool, it is said that Corberan is a ‘self-confessed disciple’ of Bielsa following their time together.
Corberan performing miracles at West Brom
At the time of writing, Corberan actually took his West Brom side above Leeds in the Championship table into third place with a 1-0 win at Cardiff City on Tuesday night.
Considering the off-field problems West Brom are currently facing due to their ownership, Corberan really is performing miracles at the Hawthorns when you compare his budget to the teams around him.
But it is not the first time Corberan has guided a team way beyond its expectations in the Championship, as he took Huddersfield to the play-off final back in 2021, where they lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.
In a separate interview earlier this month, Corberan described his time working with Bielsa as a ‘turning point’ in his career given where he was before moving to Elland Road.
And it is clear to see he has taken inspiration from Bielsa’s managerial style due to how well drilled into his tactical ideas his current West Brom side are.
