‘Brilliant’ player Leeds United sold in the summer has played just 61 minutes since Elland Road exit

Tyler Roberts had been hoping a permanent exit from Leeds United in the summer would really allow him to kick on in his career.

The 24-year-old left Elland Road to join Birmingham City with the intention of playing regular minutes, but unfortunately, it has been a familiar tale for him this season.

Having enjoyed a good pre-season with the Blues, Roberts played 61 minutes in their opening day draw at Swansea City, but has not been seen since.

Roberts picked up the injury in a training session just a day before he was set to face his former club Leeds for the first time since leaving in the summer.

Birmingham’s former manager John Eustace confirmed it was a calf injury Roberts picked up, a problem he has often struggled with during his career.

Roberts injury struggles have continued since leaving Leeds

Eustace had been hoping Roberts would only be out for a few weeks, but the Wales international is still yet to make his return to a matchday squad.

Unfortunately, injuries have blighted Roberts’ career so far, which first started shortly after his arrival at Leeds as he suffered a cracked shin in training that ruled him out for seven months.

Other injuries at Leeds included a ruptured hamstring tendon under Jesse Marsch, as well as various other muscular strains which have so prevented him from fulfilling his potential, which Jermaine Beckford hailed as ‘brilliant’ in 2021.

On loan at Queens Park Rangers last season, Roberts was restricted to just 18 appearances due to a calf injury that also saw him miss the World Cup with Wales.

It is a real shame to see just how much of an impact injuries are having on his career, but hopefully it won’t be long before he is back on the pitch.
