Brian Deane has replied to Phil Hay’s latest Athletic article which outlines the managers on Leeds United’s shortlist by saying he is “worried” by some of the names mentioned – such as, Steven Gerrard, Brendan Rodgers and more.
Leeds are close to completing a takeover that will see Andrea Radrizzani relinquish the 56% majority stake he has, to the 49ers Enterprises. Indeed, it is expected a takeover will be completed by the weekend, as per some reports.
When the takeover is complete, Leeds can begin the process of hiring a new manager, sporting director and the future of some of the squad that are keen on exiting. Getting the choice of manager right is absolutely pivotal.
The club need a manager that can give Leeds the tools required to get the Whites back into the Premier League. Hay names Gerrard, Rodgers, Carlos Corberan and Scott Parker as options. That worries ex-Leeds man Deane.

So, who should be appointed as the club’s next manager? The shortlist is hardly inspiring. Gerrard last struggled at Villa, Parker failed at Club Brugge, Rodgers is hardly going to drop into the Championship. Corberan might be best.
He starred in his first role after leaving Leeds – where he worked as 21’s manager and on Marcelo Bielsa’s coaching staff – at Huddersfield. He guided the Terriers to the play-off final. Now at West Brom, he has impressed again.
But it is unclear who the 49ers will target when they finally come into full power of the club. Something that will hopefully be done before the end of the week, to allow Leeds to start planning for an instant Championship return.
