Brenden Aaronson has told American outlet Pioneer Press that “people didn’t see things” going on at Leeds United behind the scenes last season – but is confident that it will make him a better player.
Aaronson, 22, played 40 times for Leeds last season after becoming Jesse Marsch’s first signing for the club from Salzburg. It saw the USA star reunite with Marsch. He started well – scoring against Chelsea.
But Aaronson’s lack of strength affected his confidence. Towards the end of the season, he had been dropped. Having cost £25m, there was plenty of criticism as he struggled to prove his transfer fee.
Since, Aaronson has taken advantage of the loan clause in his contract – along with a number of other deserting Leeds players, which has seen him garner criticism. He has joined German side Union Berlin.
It will see him play in the Champions League with the Bundesliga outfit. Aaronson discussed his time at Leeds and he says that things happened behind the scenes that people are completely unaware of.
“As a player, it was good. I enjoyed my time, I learned a lot. It was definitely ups and downs. The first half of the year was a real high. I think we played really good football at the time,” Aaronson told Twin Cities.
“The second part of the year, stuff happens. It was tough. A lot of things going on with the club, people that aren’t seeing things, it’s tough. I learned a lot. Lots go through stuff like this and it only gets better.”

Aaronson clearly is a massive talent – but he needs to be playing in the right kind of intensity, tempo, style of league to get the best out of him. The physicality of the Premier League simply did not suit him.
He has made an indifferent start to life at Union. Some fans are impressed but of course, he has been sent off too. It will be interesting to see how he fares over an entire season alongside Leonardo Bonucci.
