Brenden Aaronson praised despite recent form for Leeds

Brenden Aaronson has been labelled first-class for the way the Leeds United star has faced up to his poor form since the World Cup.

It has been an incredibly mixed first season at Leeds for Brenden Aaronson. Of course, his £25 million move was one of the rewards for the Whites staying in the Premier League.

And it seemed that he could not have made a better start to life at Elland Road. He should have arguably been credited with the winning goal against Wolves on the opening day. And he produced a stunning performance when Jesse Marsch’s men tore Chelsea apart.

However, as Leeds started to slide down the table, Aaronson’s form did, too. There were still some bright moments. He arguably had one of his best games in the dramatic win over Liverpool. But Aaronson has not scored in the Premier League since August.

He subsequently only played a small role for the USMNT at the World Cup. And since then, it has been incredibly disappointing for Aaronson.

During the In Soccer We Trust podcast, the pundits discussed an interview Aaronson has given in which he noted that his form has been poor and explained that not playing a lot at the World Cup did have an impact.

And former US striker Charlie Davies praised Aaronson for the way he is handling his current form.

“The World Cup took a lot out of him because he was playing with this confidence early on at Leeds. And then you go to the tournament and you go from playing in the Prem where coaches are saluting your performances, that you’re known as a guy who’s active and getting on the ball and causing problems, you’re scoring against Chelsea; to not playing in the World Cup. That can’t be anymore deflating as a young player,” he told In Soccer We Trust.

“That takes a while to get out of that funk. But the way he’s handled it, first-class. Because the only thing you can do is just put your head down and keep working and hopefully get out of that situation. And it seems like, right now, he’s finally finding his feet again so that’s been good to see.

“I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about Brenden Aaronson as a player and a person.”

The worry is that teams seemingly started to work out Aaronson before the World Cup. Certainly, he can really annoy Leeds fans with how easily he is knocked off the ball by opponents. Often it feels as though he is thinking about winning the free-kick rather than holding onto his possession before contact is even made.

And his decision-making is questionable. He is a young player. But there have been a number of times where he seems to make the wrong call, often resulting in a promising attack breaking down.

Aaronson definitely has potential. But Leeds are not in a position to be patient with him right now. Javi Gracia’s men are in a relegation battle.

And we actually have a range of exciting attacking players. Certainly, Aaronson’s form is going to come under greater scrutiny if the likes of Rodrigo, Luis Sinisterra and Georginio Rutter are on the bench.

It has been a tough campaign for the youngster. But all will be forgiven if he can now smash a couple into the top corner before the season concludes.
