Brad Friedel says he would drive Leeds star to Premier League club, amid £20m reports

Brad Friedel has told the Sky Sports Transfer Show (07/08, 7.35PM) that he would “drive” Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams to Stamford Bridge if Chelsea were intent on landing the USA skipper – with Mauricio Pochettino keen.

Adams, 24, remains on the sidelines at Elland Road and has done since March. He is still in rehab as he continues to overcome hamstring surgery. Without Adams, Leeds have since been relegated and started the 2023-24 campaign.

Phil Hay reported on The Athletic’s website that Chelsea want to sign Adams – and would only have to pay £20m to lure him to West London, due to a release clause inserted in Adams’ contract. It looks more and more likely he is off.

Many Americans often look out for their players playing in European football – and rather than support a team, they support a player. Friedel is no different. Having coached Adams in USA’s youth sides, he would love him at Chelsea.

“If he has the chance to go to Chelsea and play with Mauricio, then I will go drive, pick him up and take him down,” Friedel said. “Incredible human being, first and foremost. Works harder than anyone I have ever coached in my life.

“He can play multiple positions. Not tall, but strong. Hard as nails. A leader. But I know Mauricio Pochettino and how well he works. I know how Tyler works. Could be a match made in heaven. I’d be delighted for Mauricio and Tyler.”

You could hardly bemoan Adams of a move to Stamford Bridge. Even if there is a rivalry, perhaps not our strongest, it is a good move for him. Chelsea have sold a whole host of midfielders and are now looking to sign replacements.

Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Denis Zakaria, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and of course, Ethan Ampadu have all left the Blues. They have signed teenager Lesley Ugochukwu from Rennes – but Adams is a more-experienced player.

The kind of combative holding midfielder Chelsea need alongside Enzo Fernandez. Moises Caicedo is obviously their main pick and signing him would mean Adams would be on the bench. So, the midfielder must be careful.
