Jermaine Beckford has blasted Javi Gracia for refusing to use Willy Gnonto during Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City in his analysis on BT Sport – simply saying he doesn’t know why Gracia continues to overlook him.

Gnonto, 19, has failed to start a League match since impressing in the 4-2 win over Wolves before the international break. He picked up an injury with Italy, resulting in his absence at Arsenal. He was an unused sub against Forest.

But he has since failed to win his starting spot back, coming on as a sub against Palace, Liverpool and then Fulham. On Tuesday night, Gnonto was unused despite Leeds chasing a winner towards the end of the clash with the Foxes.

Gracia has come in for criticism for refusing to start Gnonto and now, Leeds fans are completely dumbfounded over his lack of use of Gnonto – even as a sub against Leicester. Beckford described the situation as “bizarre” last night.

“When Luis Sinisterra got injured, the whole stadium erupted with Willy Gnonto. They sang his song. There’s no doubting he’s a fan favourite, he’s a fantastic player. The fans buzz off him. I don’t know [why he’s on the bench].

“There was another opportunity to bring him on when Brenden Aaronson came on. He only did two subs today and one of them was forced, that’s bizarre. Especially when you could see the players were getting tired, a bit leggy.

“I don’t know if I’m being brutally honest [why Gracia did not bring Gnonto on],” Beckford continued. “Works hard, Gnonto has the other side of the game – he has a naughty streak. He works his socks off. I don’t understand it.”

It is bizarre. A player that can genuinely change a game and in a match that was so tight, surely it would have been perfect to bring Gnonto on and give Leeds another dimension in attack. This is not a raw player, not a luxury player.

He is a grafter with massive attacking potency. A player that will get back and do the dirty stuff, as well as having the energy to get forward and shine in the final third. It is beyond belief why Gracia continues to overlook Gnonto.
