Ben Parker says Leeds have a 19-year-old youngster who’s already too good for their U21’s

Sonny Perkins has returned to Leeds United this month as the Whites decide to cut his loan in half at Oxford United, having struggled for game time – and Ben Parker has commented on the decision.

Following our relegation to the Championship, 19-year-old Perkins was expected to play a big part for the club in the second tier. It comes after four senior outings last season, even scoring against Cardiff.

But, he was sent out on loan after a brief substitute outing – also against Cardiff – on the opening day of the season. He has struggled at Oxford. He managed just six outings for the League One side this term.

On Wednesday evening, Leeds confirmed their first decision of the January window – and it was to bring Perkins back to Elland Road. The right decision, given his lack of game time at the Kassam Stadium.

Speaking to LS11 on Thursday morning, former Leeds defender Parker discussed Perkins after Daniel Farke’s side made the decision to bring the attacker back to Elland Road. He says it was the right move.

It is the right decision but what it does mean, is that Perkins will now have to remain at Elland Road for the rest of the season – or back to Oxford. That is because players cannot play for more than two clubs.

He played for Leeds on the opening day of the season, and then Oxford. It is likely that Perkins will now be back in the U21 side as Parker says, and perhaps get himself on the bench here and there this term.

But he has huge competition ahead of him. Cree Summerville, Dan James, Willy Gnonto, Ian Poveda and Jaidon Anthony are the first-team options for Leeds right now. A big swing is needed in his favour.
