Ben Parker has told Thursday’s LS11 podcast that he expects Sam Allardyce to stick with Leeds United goalkeeper Joel Robles against Newcastle United on Saturday at Elland Road – with Illan Meslier remaining on the bench.

Robles, 32, was handed his Premier League debut on Saturday against Manchester City. Only his third outing as a Leeds player, after a couple of appearances in the Cup. The Spaniard performed well in Allardyce’s first game.

Indeed, he stopped a one on one with Erling Haaland – and might have even got a touch on Ilkay Gundogan’s spot kick, touching it onto the post. He made a telling contribution and was easily one of our best players on the day.

Ex-Leeds defender Parker was asked if Allardyce will stick with Robles, or bring in Meslier after resting him at the Etihad. He responded by saying it would be harsh if he dropped Robles after one game, expecting him to start.

“A tough one. I’ve got a feeling he will stick with Robles, it would be harsh to give him a game, against Manchester City away, to then pull him out. Robles is a great character, a good lad to have around. I expect him to go Robles.”

Parker expects Allardyce to stick with Leeds goalkeeper Robles

Given Robles played well against Manchester City, and that Meslier’s lack of form was so alarming, it is more than likely that Robles remains between the sticks against Newcastle. He has a bit more experience, more leadership.

He is nowhere near the levels of Meslier in terms of shot-stopping, or with the ball at his feet. But he’s commanding, and is more likely to come and collect a set-piece or a cross. Something which Newcastle are very strong at.

Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Robles will remain in goal for the remaining three games depending on his availability, and we at LeedsUnited.News believe the Spaniard is likely to be picked ahead of Meslier on Saturday.
