Neil Redfearn has issued his verdict on the performance of Georginio Rutter as Leeds United drew with Hull City in their latest Championship clash on Wednesday night.
Redfearn was speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after Daniel Farke’s side managed to hold on with 10 men to earn a point.
It was a frustrating night in front of goal for Leeds. We went into the game off the back of the emphatic 3-0 victory over Millwall at the weekend. But this was more like the stalemate with Sheffield Wednesday.
Neither Georginio Rutter or Joel Piroe were able to get on the scoresheet against the Tigers. Piroe had another tricky game. But Rutter was much more involved, battling constantly with the centre-backs and having a couple of sightings of the goal.
Redfearn praises Rutter after Leeds draw
He was unable to take the chances which came his way. Nevertheless, Neil Redfearn thought that the Frenchman did a really good job in the goalless draw.
“I was impressed with Rutter tonight,” he told BBC Radio Leeds. “He put himself himself about, showed in little moments where he got on the ball and played people in.
“He looked a threat, he works hard. It weren’t Piroe’s night tonight, he was sort of caught in between. But you’re going to get games like that. It’s a tough league.”
Rutter is clearly not yet the finished article. But there is no question that he is proving a lot of people wrong with his form at the start of this season.
In fairness, few were critical of Rutter himself when he arrived. Instead, the criticism concerned whether he was what Leeds needed at a time when our Premier League status was so precarious.
Rutter has been very bright at the start of this season. He has contributed a couple of superb goals. And he is forming a decent understanding with Piroe.
There are going to be games where it does not click. In fact, some will point out that it has not happened for the pair in two of the last three games.
But Rutter is playing well even when he is not scoring goals. And that is encouraging for the rest of the season.
