BBC pundit issues verdict on Georginio Rutter after Leeds defeat

Neil Redfearn was not impressed by the effort Georginio Rutter put in after coming on for Leeds United in their loss to Birmingham City on Saturday, insisting that he would have run about more in the same amount of time.

Redfearn was speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after Daniel Farke’s side were beaten by the Blues at St Andrew’s, with a late penalty settling the game.

The good news in a mad week for Leeds was that Georginio Rutter made his return to the squad after missing the opening two games of the campaign due to injury.

And the Frenchman came on in the latter stages as Leeds really started to run out of ideas in attack. Unfortunately, the January signing was unable to change the game.

Of course, it has been a tough time for Rutter since his move to Leeds. So it was hoped that he would be one of the players who may actually benefit from the club dropping down to the Championship.

Redfearn not impressed by Rutter contribution in Leeds loss

However, Redfearn was not impressed by Rutter’s contribution – admitting that he wanted to see so much more from the forward in terms of work-rate.

“There’s obviously something there. But the one thing that’s unconditional in a professional footballer is effort. You’ve got to work your socks off. He’s come on for 20/25 minutes. You could throw his kit back in the skip. It’s not even wet. You’ve got to graft,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.

“How long does he want? He had 20 minutes there to make a name for himself. I’m 58 now, I’d have run about more.”

In fairness, Rutter has recently been out with injury. You would not be surprised if Daniel Farke would have ideally wanted to take a little longer before bringing him back into the side.

And Leeds were hardly playing well before his introduction. So it was always asking a lot to expect the 21-year-old to change the game once he came on.

Some will not be happy with Rutter. And you have to admit that he has not been good enough since arriving in January.

But in a week dominated by hearing about players who did not want to play for Leeds, Rutter is seemingly one of those who is planning to stick around and prove himself at Elland Road.

So, many will much rather stick with the youngster over anyone who is not convinced about playing for the club.
