BBC pundit blasts ‘clueless’ Leeds United player for performance in 0-0 draw at Bristol City

BBC pundit Jon Newsome has shared his verdict on Leeds United’s 0-0 draw at Bristol City.

Leeds were looking to make it three wins in a week after the international break at Ashton Gate but really struggled to build any sort of momentum in the match.

Daniel Farke‘s side dominated the majority of possession but clear-cut chances were few and far between. When they did arrive, Leeds were extremely wasteful.

Junior Firpo and Largie Ramazani were huge misses for Leeds down that left-hand-side, with Sam Byram’s constant tendency to cut in onto his right-foot a real issue for the Whites.

That said, if one team will have come away from that match feeling they should’ve taken all three points, it is Leeds.

Jon Newsome blasts ‘clueless’ Manor Solomon for Leeds

Dan James was the man chosen to replace Ramazani in attack for Leeds but it is quite clear he is still not 100 per cent fit, which is understandable after six matches out.

James had a golden opportunity to sprint the length of the field from Leeds’ defensive corner but a combination of poor control and running out of steam meant the chance went begging.

Manor Solomon was brought onto replace him with around 20 minutes to play and similarly to Tuesday night, simply couldn’t get anything going.

His first involvement was allowing a simple pass go under his foot and out of play, and watching him try link up down that left-hand-side was a real eye sore.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds post-match, Newsome believes Solomon looked completely ‘clueless’ when he came onto the field.

He said: “I think you would have taken that [seven points]. Obviously you would have liked nine but I think you would have taken that, most definitely. But what I was a little bit disappointed about today was when he put the subs on.

“They didn’t have a positive effect. Solomon down this left-hand-side, he looked a little bit clueless and couldn’t get into the game. Mateo Joseph’s header, he should have done better. A lot of the time Daniel Farke puts a substitution on they have a real positive effect, but I don’t think that happened today.”

Solomon not living up to expectations

Though it is still early days and he quite clearly needs time after all his injuries, it wouldn’t be unfair to say Solomon isn’t living up to the hype right now.

Whenever Ramazani and Wilfried Gnonto are on the left-hand-side, Leeds always look considerably more dangerous due to their ability to drift inside and leave space for the full-back.

In contrast, Solomon appears to be the type of winger who loves to hug the touchline, which has therefore seen Leeds’ attack look a little disjointed in the last two matches.

Solomon really needs to improve between now and January, otherwise it may be worth considering whether to send him back early in favour of bringing some new in.
