Jesse Marsch’s spell as Leeds United boss was ruined by his work in the transfer window, ultimately playing a key part in the club’s relegation to the Championship in 2022-23.
In his first summer as Leeds manager, Marsch sold Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha for £100m. It saw Marsch spend the cash on many players he had previously worked with like Brenden Aaronson and Max Wober.
Rasmus Kristensen and Tyler Adams also joined, while Marc Roca, Luis Sinisterra and Weston McKennie were also signed during Marsch’s era. The latter five players have already left, with Kristensen on loan.
The quality of Marsch’s squad combined with his inept tactics of removing any width from the side saw Leeds eventually relegated, even if he was only sacked in February of the 2022-23 campaign at Leeds.

Leif Davis signs four-year deal with Ipswich after Leeds exit
But some under-the-radar sales made during Marsch’s era have proved to be woeful decisions. Italian goalkeeper Elia Caprile is starring between the sticks for Antonio Conte’s Napoli at the top of Serie A.
Another sold by Marsch was left-back Leif Davis, who has gone on to shine for Ipswich Town. He starred for Ipswich in promotion not only from League One, but from the Championship to the Premier League.
Now, 24-year-old Davis has signed a four-year contract at Ipswich after helping them gain promotion to the Premier League, and the defender posted on Instagram after putting pen to paper with Ipswich.
His caption read: “Delighted to sign 4 more years! The last 2 years of playing for this amazing club made this decision very easy for me, can’t wait to make more memories of a lifetime. Thank you for all the love and support. 2028.”
Barry Douglas predicts England call-up for Leif Davis
Plenty of Leeds players or former Leeds teammates were among those to reply to Davis’ Instagram. It also included Barry Douglas, who will have helped tutor Davis while at Elland Road as his senior left-back.
Douglas has just made a move of his own to St. Johnstone, but he commented on Davis’ Instagram post. The Scotland international predicted an England call-up for the impressive Ipswich star in due course.

Others like Dom Matteo, Tyler Roberts, Sean McGurk and Sam Greenwood also commented on Davis’ post. Roberts, McGurk and Greenwood played alongside Davis for much of his time in Leeds U21 side.
