Bad news as referee appointed for Leeds clash, all three Leeds games last season were losses

Chris Kavanagh has been appointed referee for Sunday’s trip to Millwall in what is a bit of a worrying one for Leeds United on two fronts – the first being his three matches in charge involving Leeds last season.

Kavanagh, 38, has only reffed one game this season – and it came in League 2, MK Dons drawing with Notts County. The Mail report this week that ref Kavanagh’s fitness has come under the microscope.

It is claimed that he has only just been given pass marks in terms of his fitness in order to ref again at Premier League standard. He is doing VAR for Manchester United’s outing against Brighton on Saturday.

So, it looks as if Kavanagh will be transitioned back into the Premier League with a testing Championship clash between two rivals in Leeds and Millwall. A fiery atmosphere is expected at The Den on Sunday.

But the appointment should not only raise the eyebrows of Leeds fans simply because of his fitness. It should also raise concern, given his form when refereeing us last season – three games, three losses.

Indeed, Kavanagh was in charge for the 1-0 loss to Arsenal – which some how, Arsenal won through a Bukayo Saka penalty. Patrick Bamford missed his spot kick. Then, the 2-0 loss to Fulham in the FA Cup.

A game in which Georginio Rutter should have scored – and did, only for Kavanagh to give a bizarre foul from Weston McKennie from the same corner. Then, a 4-1 loss to Bournemouth, Javi Gracia’s last game.

So, not only is Kavanagh’s fitness a worry – but also, our recent history with Kavanagh in the middle has not been good. Hopefully, that run comes to an end and we gain a second three points of the season.
