Bad memories for Leeds United and Daniel Farke as Premier League make announcement for Brentford

Next up for Leeds United is Brentford on Sunday, as Daniel Farke looks to build on the momentum earned from matches against Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

With Farke’s position now looking a lot more secure at Elland Road, the German will be hoping to maintain what has become a solid run of form over the last two and a half Premier League games.

Prediction time – do Leeds get a result away at Brentford?

Leeds have a dismal record in London, and their recent form against Brentford isn’t much better, winning only once against The Bees in the last five meetings. That came in the final game of the 2021-22 season.

However, Brentford have lost four of their last six games, and their last two Premier League games, albeit against Tottenham and Arsenal. Both sides will feel they have a chance. John Brooks will be the referee.

Bad memories for Farke as John Brooks confirmed as referee

The Premier League confirmed on its website this week that Brooks will officiate his ninth Leeds game. Of the previous eight, Leeds have only won twice while referee Brooks has been the man with the whistle.

The last time Brooks took charge of a Leeds game, worryingly, was the Championship play-off final at the end of the 2023-24 season. Arguably, Farke’s biggest failure since taking over as manager at Elland Road.

The 1-0 defeat remains a painful subject for those involved, Leeds fans, and certainly, for Farke himself. Brooks also refereed the 3-1 defeat to Southampton earlier that season, one of three losses to the Saints.

How long does Daniel Farke now have at Leeds? 🔮

Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and others on Farke's position…

Gary Neville: “I don’t know how much attention we can pay to the rumours of the manager being close to the edge. That will have pulled him right back. If you’re in the boardroom, you’re thinking okay, let’s just hang back.”

Jamie Carragher: “Yes, brilliant management, but going to 3-5-2 doesn’t mean all Leeds problems are finished. They are going to lose games; they are going to find it difficult. They do not have the quality of the other teams.”

Chris Sutton: “Speculation surrounding him – I don’t know how true it is, but he was fighting for his job.“I thought that was deeply unfair because Leeds have been competitive. Really good at home. I’m really pleased for Daniel Farke.”

Conor Coady: “I never understood it, the last few weeks. He’s got a bit of stick and people have mentioned his job. I think he’s done a brilliant job.”

John Brooks’ first Leeds game saw Daniel Farke secure 2018 win

Farke’s first season at Norwich didn’t go to plan, but towards the end of the 2017-18 season with Paul Heckingbottom in charge at Elland Road, the now-Leeds manager guided Norwich to a 2-1 victory.

Now, Brooks will be tasked with taking charge at the G-Tech on Sunday, with both sides aiming to take advantage after a tough run of fixtures. Leeds are currently without Sean Longstaff and Dan James.

However, Lukas Nmecha is expected to be fit for Leeds after being a late call and missing out on the 3-3 draw with Liverpool on Saturday night. Having Nmecha up top with Calvert-Lewin gives Leeds a chance.
