Leeds United are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Italy striker Mateo Retegui and with his price tag just £13million according to one journalist – Leeds would be pulling off a deal as good as Willy Gnonto’s signing.
Gnonto, 19, arrived at Elland Road for less than £5million when the Whites decided to bring forward his arrival from Swiss side FC Zurich. Since then, he has earned Elland Road favourite status – with seven goals and assists in 20.
A goal at Old Trafford, and a Paolo Di Canio-esque scissor kick included. His driving runs, his passionate displays all for a bargain £4.5million is incredible business. Now, Leeds have the chance to pull off a repeat of Gnonto’s arrival.
Retegui, his Italy teammate, is available for a bargain £13m. That is according to a Tweet from Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg. On Tuesday, Italian journalist Ciro Venerato said – as per Area Napoli – that Leeds were keen.
Retegui has seriously caught the eye, not least of Roberto Mancini. The Italy boss needed a striker in the last break, and decided to call-up Retegui – who is Argentine-born, and has only played his football in Argentina so far.

But, his Grandmother is Italian – and low and behold, he has now played twice for Italy. He scored in his first two caps, netting against England and then Malta. His form in Argentina jumps off the page, too. This season, especially.
The Argentine season runs similar to that of the MLS, in that it starts at the end of January and runs until November. Retegui already has seven goals in 10 games – and in 52 senior Tigre outings, he has scored a whopping 30 goals.
A move for Gnonto’s Italy teammate shares similarities, if he joins Leeds. From a League that is pretty poor, but on the cheap. Already an Italy player and young, Leeds would repeat their Gnonto success, if they land £13m Retegui.
