Star Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo has named the former Leeds United players that always made life difficult when he played against him.

Semenyo has faced Leeds United three times during his career, and was part of the Bournemouth side that took a point with a last-minute equaliser at Elland Road earlier this season.

However, his first meeting with the Whites came back in the Championship in March 2019, as Leeds were hunting a return to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa was the Leeds manager at the time, and the line-up included former fan favourite Kalvin Phillips, who took his usual place at the heart of the midfield.

Now, Semenyo has explained why he hated playing against Phillips, naming the ex-Leeds man as one of the toughest opponents he has faced.

Which former Leeds player would you have back, if you could pick one? Raphinha surely has to be up there💎

Antoine Semenyo praises former Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Speaking to Away Days, star Premier League forward Semenyo explained why playing against Phillips made such an impression on him.

According to the Bournemouth man, he was once asked to line up as a number 10 opposite Phillips, and the exiled Manchester City star gave him a torrid ride.

Asked what it was like to face Bielsa’s Leeds side, Semenyo said: “Tough.

“Kalvin Phillips. I played in the 10 that day and he gave me a tough day. Oh man. He is a good player. He’s just obviously gone to a team with so many superstars.

“It’s just unfortunate, but he’s a top top player. He gave me a tough time in the office. I’ll tell you that.”

Kalvin Phillips still has time to resurrect his faltering career

Sadly for Phillips, he has found opportunities to show his best form few and far between since his move to the Etihad, having fallen out of favour with Guardiola.

Phillips has been linked with a return to Leeds in recent months, and has played just seven minutes of football in all competitions as he continues to be surplus to requirements with City.

Who would you name in your dream Leeds 5-a-side team? 🤔

David Batty was one of the big names Kalvin Phillips picked in 2020 💪

However, the former Leeds favourite still has time on his side as he looks to rebuild his career. Phillips recently turned 30, so he should have several more seasons left in him.

Phillips has also been linked with a move to the continent, as he looks to take the next step in his stalled playing career. If he can find the right club, he can still be an important player.
