The weekend could not have gone better for Leeds United. In the glorious lunchtime sun at Elland Road, Daniel Farke’s side secured a second successive win as they edged past Preston North End.
A 2-1 win that realistically, should have been three or four with Joel Piroe missing two or three guilt-edged chances. However, the biggest roar of the day did not come when Leeds scored early on.
Indeed, the noise from the south stand was random to those unaware that Plymouth had just scored a second goal against Sheffield United – but instantly, everyone was aware Sheffield United were losing.
The weekend ended with Leeds winning and restoring their surrendered five-point lead over Sheffield United, as Chris Wilder’s Blades imploded. Wilder said Sheffield United have “let it slip” after the defeat.

Ally McCoist weighs up Sheffield United’s top-two chances
So with four Championship games to play, Leeds need just seven points to secure a place in the top two and that is if Sheffield United go to Burnley and win, as well as winning the three other remaining games.
On Monday morning, Ally McCoist was discussing Sheffield United’s chances of turning the tide and getting themselves back into the top two. He said on TalkSPORT (14 April, 7AM) there is still a chance.
“It’s strange. Everybody has to concentrate on a massive Easter and then Sheffield United go to Burnley. if Sheffield United win those two games, then I suggest they are right back in the automatic chances.”
Why Leeds United fans can now believe with four games left
Five points ahead with only 12 points to play for, it looks more than likely that Daniel Farke has done it and got Leeds into the Premier League – largely thanks to Sheffield United’s implosion and three losses.
Leeds have the best goal difference, more than double Sheffield United’s, too. That and the fact that Sheffield United have to go to Burnley, with Burnley winning the reverse fixture at Bramall Lane this term.
Not only that, but Leeds have an easy-ish run-in. Games against relegation-threatened sides in Oxford United, Stoke and Plymouth – as well as Bristol City, though that game is at home. It looks good for Leeds.
