Aidy White says who should start at left-back for Leeds United against Burnley – Sam Byram or Junior Firpo

Daniel Farke will have a number of decisions to make to his Leeds United side on Monday night when The Whites take on Burnley in arguably, their biggest match of the season so far.

Results in the Championship over the weekend have increased the importance of Leeds United’s trip to Turf Moor. Sheffield United suffered a shock home loss to Joe Gelhardt’s Hull City, the Blades losing 3-0.

Sunderland also dropped points, with Darko Gyabi laying on an assist as Plymouth scored a late equaliser to draw 2-2. A win sees Leeds go four clear at the top but more importantly, six clear of Burnley in third.

But defeat sees Burnley go level on points with Leeds and level with Sheffield United, above the Blades on goal difference. Farke will have some decisions to make and the biggest one is likely to be at left-back.

Junior Firpo came off the bench against Norwich City and was involved in Leeds’ second goal last time out, as Manor Solomon whipped in a brilliant cross or Dan James to score and continue his fine form.

Sam Byram has deputised for Byram while £13m Firpo has been injured for the last six weeks. Leeds icon White said Firpo was “brilliant” when he came on last week – and told BBC Radio Leeds who should start.

“Firpo was brilliant when he came on. It’s a difficult one, Sam has had a lot of games. I’m sticking with the same starting 11, we’ve got enough time to recover. I’m not changing anything just yet,” White said.

Does Daniel Farke go on the attack, or does he play cautious?

The current starting XI has secured two wins against decent opposition in Sheffield Wednesday and then Norwich, keeping two clean sheets. The old-age argument is, why change a winning team?

But it all depends on the approach Farke takes. Does he try to take the game to Burnley and look to break down a Burnley defence that have conceded just nine goals in 28 Championship matches in 2024-25.

Or, does he play cautiously and focus on shutting Burnley out, prioritising that over attack. If he does the latter, then Byram starts. If he tries to get a goal and break Burnley down, then Firpo is the one to start.
