Agent of Charlie Cresswell says Leeds have performed u-turn on defender’s future

Agent Hayden Evans has told Phil Hay’s Athletic podcast that Leeds United have changed their stance on the future of Charlie Cresswell ahead of the summer window – having been open to the defender’s permanent exit in January.

Cresswell, 20, has enjoyed a successful season at Millwall. There have been times when he has been on the bench, but the England U21 defender has clocked up 30 games – scoring five goals. He has an eye injury at the moment.

It might be that that injury rules him out for the rest of the season. But he will want to be ready and available for the Lions, given they could still have eight games to play as they sit in the play-offs. There were reports he could leave.

The Sun said in January that Middlesbrough were eyeing a £4m move. The agent of Cresswell, Evans, was asked about those reports and spoke openly, saying that Leeds were open to the exit of Cresswell if the price was right.

But that stance, largely due to Jesse Marsch’s exit, has changed: “At that time, there were no real objections from Leeds if the right price was found. That may have changed, though. New manager want everyone in pre-season.

“So they can make their own assessments and Charlie’s form – he’s doing what we know he is capable of. It is interesting, we will see. He’s under contract, he’s got another year at Leeds. The interest is there,” Evans said.

Cresswell has been superb in the Championship. Not only cutting the mustard at Championship level, but starring for Millwall. He has won numerous Player of the Month awards at the London club, and even scoring five goals.

Little surprise, there is interest in him. Especially, with his contract ending in June 2024. But, Leeds have got to do all they can to keep him. With Diego Llorente likely to leave Leeds this summer, keeping Cresswell is paramount.
