Paul Merson has described Georginio Rutter’s goal as “absolutely unbelievable” after he netted his fourth goal for Leeds United during our 3-1 League win over Swansea City on Wednesday night.
Leeds came from behind on Wednesday night to secure a comfortable win, after Jamie Paterson had opened the scoring inside 60 seconds. Joel Piroe against his former side made it 1-1 on four minutes.
Then, just before the break, Rutter controlled a long ball forward from Ethan Ampadu with a gorgeous first touch. With the ball coming over his shoulder, he plucked one of out of the sky with his left foot.
A second touch to get the ball out of his feet, before sliding the ball past Carl Rushworth to put Leeds 2-1 up – despite being under intense pressure from Bashir Humphreys. Dan James made it 3-1 to Leeds.
Another assist for Rutter. So, a great night for Leeds and Rutter – even more so, with Leicester failing to beat Sheffield Wednesday. Merson was stunned by Rutter’s goal, comparing him to Dennis Bergkamp.
“I’d go Dennis Bergkamp. That is unbelievable. Anything over the top of your head like that, that is absolutely unbelievable. That’s class that is,” Merson said, on Sky Sports Soccer Special (29/11).

It is a goal of enormous quality. But something we have come to expect of Rutter, this season. His technical ability and power is up there with any player in the League. His goalscoring, not so much.
Not that that matters so much when he continues to churn out the performances he is doing. Rutter’s ability to create far outweighs the need for him to score – but he got himself a fourth of the season.
That’s 10 goal involvements for the season now, and he is only getting better. Leeds are going to have to be careful come January and certainly next summer, when top-tier clubs inevitably start sniffing.
