£4m Leeds man says he is fitter than ever after ‘scary’ few months, had double vision

Charlie Cresswell has been quoted by The Mail as saying that the last couple of months have been “scary times” after suffering a fractured eye socket while on loan at Millwall from Leeds United – even saying he had double vision.

Cresswell, 20, went on loan to Championship side Millwall last summer after managing just seven games for the first XI. He starred for the London side, scoring five goals in 30 games – but his season ended early due to the injury.

He would have certainly played closer to 40 games, and had he been fit, might have helped Millwall finish in the top six. But, Millwall missed out. Now, he returns to Leeds. The Sun said Leeds were open to selling in January for £4m.

But, Leeds Live have reported this summer that Angus Kinnear is including him in first-team plans. Relegation to the Championship might have actually helped Cresswell, in that Robin Koch and Diego Llorente are set to leave the club.

But before returning to Leeds for pre-season, Cresswell is with England’s U21 side at the Euros. They begin their campaign on Thursday against the Czech Republic and Cresswell has been speaking about his injury, beforehand.

“I had surgery and had double vision. The surgeon told me that would all go away and it did after a couple of weeks. Now I feel as fit as ever and the mask is just for protection. But it was scary times,” Cresswell said, on his injury.

Things look good for Cresswell. A Leeds lad, and son of ex-Elland Road striker Richard Cresswell, the defender is now a player that Leeds could hang their hat on for the 23-24 Championship season on the right of the defence.

Yes, Leeds have Luke Ayling and Cody Drameh at right-back, meaning Cresswell could compete with Rasmus Kristensen in the middle of the defence. But given his form in the second tier last term, he has simply got to start.
