Joel Robles only managed six appearances for Leeds United in the year he spent with us – conceding a whopping 14 goals. But he has since moved to Saudi Arabia, and is shining with second-tier Al-Qadsiah.
Robles, 33, joined Leeds in the summer of 2022 as experienced cover for Illan Meslier. A free agent after leaving Real Betis, Leeds felt signing the lofty Spaniard would strengthen their options behind Meslier.
He warmed the bench, playing in a couple of Cup matches before replacing Meslier. Sam Allardyce’s arrival saw Meslier drop to the bench for the final four matches of the season – Robles taking his place.
Robles conceded 11 goals in those four league games. Hardly his fault, more the defence in front of him. Leeds invited Robles back to Thorp Arch for pre-season but did not offer him a deal. He left, on a free.

Robles impressing with Fowler’s Al-Qadsiah since Leeds exit
Ex-Leeds striker Robbie Fowler swooped. Appointed manager of Al-Qadsiah in the summer, Fowler was busy in the summer. He brought in a whole host of new signings, including some recognisable names.
Luciano Vietto, Mbaye Diagne, Andre Carillo and ex-Wigan and Sunderland man Max Power. Robles, too. He has since started all seven League games, with Fowler looking to get Al-Qadsiah into the top tier.
They’ve made a near-perfect start. Unbeaten in seven, five wins and two draws. Robles and co. sit in second place, conceding just three. Fowler looks good to guide Al-Qadsiah and Robles to promotion.
Robles has signed a contract until the end of the season at Al-Qadsiah so it will be interesting to see what happens next – but you would suggest that if promotion is secured, he may sign a new contract.
