A report from Italian outlet Calcio Mercato say Saudi Arabian clubs are pursuing a move for Chris Smalling ahead of the January window – and a move will come as a huge boost to Leeds United.
Smalling, 33, has endured a difficult start to the season. The first three Serie A games came and went but Smalling’s battles with knee tendonitis has not. He has not played for Roma since the first three.
Since then, Diego Llorente has come in. The 30-year-old has been playing in the middle of the back three for Roma as a replacement for Smalling. He is currently on loan at Roma, his second loan there.
He rejoined Roma on a season-long loan in the summer, reuniting once again with Jose Mourinho – the man who handed him his professional debut while Real Madrid manager. Llorente is still a Leeds player.
But, Leeds will be desperate to get rid of the Spaniard. It simply did not work for the ex-Sociedad man at Elland Road. Injuries, poor performances. Yorkshire, and English football, did not work for Llorente.
Chris Smalling moving to Saudi Arabia is a boost for Leeds
At Roma, he is clawing back his reputation – perhaps, even his Spain National Team slot. But it is clear that when Smalling is fit, Llorente is on the bench. But with Smalling injured, his importance is growing.
Now, CM say Saudi Arabian clubs are considering moves for Smalling in January. He has a contract at Roma until 2025, but the lure of the cash in the Middle East could tempt both Roma and Smalling.
If a move does occur, which it could do if Smalling can get back onto the grass, then surely – it boosts our chances of selling Llorente. Leeds will be desperate to sell. If Smalling goes, it is a massive plus.
