Dom Poleon never really got going in a Leeds United shirt after breaking into the senior side and left the club in 2014 – but now, the striker is on fire with Ebbsfleet United, albeit in the National League.

Poleon, 30, left Leeds to join Oldham. Famously, he was part of the ‘Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet’ saga. He was the player Leeds announced they had sold, prior to that Tweet – before Matt Smith went to Fulham.

Coming through the Leeds academy, Poleon went on to play 37 times at senior level for Leeds – scoring four goals. He went on to have spells at Wimbledon, Bradford, Crawley, Newport and Dover until 2020.

Released in the summer of 2020, Poleon struggled to find a new club for almost a year – before moving to Ebbsfleet in February 2021, where he has remained since. He played his 100th match on Saturday.

Dom Poleon shining in National League after Leeds exit in 2014

Last season, his superb 35 goals in 45 games helped Ebbsfleet gain promotion to the National League. This season, his form has continued. He failed to get on the score sheet in his 100th game on Saturday.

Poleon has made a stunning start to the term despite a number of injuries already. Managing 12 games, Poleon has scored eight goals. Ebbsfleet sit in 21st, and need Poleon to keep scoring to avoid the drop.

But for the forward, it has been a good start to life back in the National League – after a couple of years below that level. His goalscoring rate is quite remarkable, and he is clearly better than his current level.
