Kai Wagner has often been linked with Leeds United and the left-back became a free agent when his deal expired at the end of December – but now, he’s re-signed with MLS side Philadelphia Union.
Wagner, 26, has starred in America over the last five years – joining the club back in February 2019. He has gone on to play 170 times for Philadelphia, having a hand in 39 goals for the Union, scoring seven.
Leeds have been constantly linked with Wagner over the last couple of years, a recent report claiming that Leeds, Brentford and West Ham were all looking at luring the German assist machine to England.
Indeed, Daniel Farke has made it clear he wants to sign a left-back – and that was before Djed Spence returned to Tottenham, and Luke Ayling joining Middlesbrough. Leeds are lacking in depth at full-back.
But now, Wagner is no longer an option. The defender has decided to re-sign with Philadelphia, Wagner signing a two-year deal with the option of a third until 2027 – after becoming a free agent in December.
Leeds United target Kai Wagner re-signs with Philadelphia Union
Leeds still need full-back additions. A right-back might be more of a necessity, given our current options are Archie Gray and Jamie Shackleton, both midfielders. Sam Byram is currently being used on the left.
Junior Firpo remains an option on the left. But with Byram and Firpo injury prone, and Shackleton having a number of injury issues this season, Leeds need one or two signings on each side of the back four.
West Ham’s Ben Johnson has emerged as a new target for Leeds, while Burnley’s Connor Roberts is a target – with the Clarets willing to ‘consider offers’ for the Wales star. There is work to be done at Leeds.
