Kai Wagner has been linked regularly with a move to Leeds United over the years after starring in the MLS with Philadelphia Union – but now, the Whites could get their man for absolutely nothing.
Wagner, 26, spent four years at Philadelphia, in which he clocked up a huge 170 appearances over the pond. Moving to America as an unknown German player, he leaves the MLS’ best left-sided defender.
Leeds have been constantly linked with Wagner, who’s had a hand in 39 goals during those 170 games. Reports earlier this season said Leeds, West Ham, Brighton and Brentford were among his suitors.
Now, Wagner is a free agent. He chose not to extend his Philadelphia deal and with the MLS season running February to December, Wagner saw his deal end on December 31. Leeds need a left-back.
Daniel Farke has made it clear he would like to sign one this month, and it is becoming expected that Leeds will wave goodbye to Junior Firpo. The Mail said in 2022, Wagner was waiting for Leeds to call.

There is growing interest in Wagner. The Scottish Sun say Rangers want to lure Wagner to Scotland as they look for a long-term replacement for Croatian star Borna Barisic, who is out of contract in June.
Wagner will have his pick of clubs and is more than likely to sign a deal with a European side sooner rather than later, given he can be brought in on a free. If Leeds want him, they must move very quickly.
Other players such as Josh Doig have been linked, but he is expected to cost north of £5m. Wagner proposes a really talented, attacking full-back – but for nothing. Surely, Leeds have to be interested.
