Wolfsburg are willing to offload Josip Brekalo in the January transfer window with the Croatian in the final year of his contract – a player Leeds United were linked with signing during Marcelo Bielsa’s era, in the summer of 2021.

Brekalo, 24, joined Wolfsburg in 2016. A fresh-faced teenager, he cost the German club £9million to sign from Dinamo Zagreb. Clocking up 129 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, he has had a hand in 41 goals – scoring 22 himself.

But last season, he was ushered out on loan to Italian club Torino for the 21-22 campaign. He did well, scoring seven goals and laying on two assists. But a permanent move did not materialise and he is back at Wolfsburg, struggling.

Indeed, this season, he has only been afforded seven appearances – only three starts in the League. Bild now report that Brekalo want him to go in January with his deal ending in June. Italian side Monza are interested in signing him.

The Serie A side have opened talks. But, The Express reported in May 2021 that Leeds were interested in luring him to Elland Road – before his move to Torino. So, could Leeds reignite said interest and sign the winger in January?

Wolfsburg willing to offload Brekalo: Leeds linked in 2021

Brekalo is a wonderful talent and still only 24. He was even compared to Arjen Robben around the time of his links with Leeds. Able to play on either flank, or even as a 10, it is his versatility that is just what Leeds need. Quality in attack.

He would give Jesse Marsch a real weapon from the bench. A player with huge experience – 234 appearances for club and country at senior level, at just 24. So, if Brekalo is going on the cheap, Leeds have got to reignite their interest.
