Leeds United talent Diogo Monteiro has posted on Instagram after captaining Portugal’s U18 side to success in the International Tournament Of Lisbon Trophy this week – after Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with England’s U18 team in Lisbon.
The 2005-born defender joined Leeds in January after breaking into Swiss side Servette’s first XI prior to his move. He has since become a regular for the club’s Under-21 side, starting nine of the last 10 Premier League 2 games.
Indeed, Monteiro has enjoyed his first six months at Leeds – helping the 21’s gain promotion back to the top tier of PL2. It comes after qualifying for the play-offs and winning in the final against Nottingham Forest, with a 3-0 win.
Now, Monteiro – who already has three caps for Portugal’s U19 side – has been in his home country as Portugal looked to secure the Lisbon Trophy. They did just that, drawing 0-0 with Neil Ryan’s Young Lions on Tuesday.
Captaining the 18’s, the £1m Leeds signing held aloft the trophy and took to Instagram after the achievement, ending his impressive season with aplomb. It might be that Monteiro continues his surge upwards next season.
Monteiro’s post is translated as: “End of the selection stage with a first place. Vacation time after a long time.”
Leeds talent Monteiro captains Portugal U18 side to Trophy this week
Monteiro has enjoyed huge success during 2022-23, on a personal level. He has gone from breaking into Servette’s first team, earning a move to what was a Premier League side, and captaining his country to a trophy this summer.
Now, he will join his Leeds teammates in enjoying a well-earned break before the Leeds players return – likely to be at the end of the month – with a view to breaking into the senior side. He will have a chance of first-team football.
Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and even other centre-backs could leave. Liam Cooper and Max Wober are likely to stay at Leeds this summer but there is every chance that the latter may go. So, Monteiro’s upward scale may continue.
