£10m Leeds United player says he was ‘fuming’ despite 1-0 win over Norwich City last night

Patrick Bamford scored his fourth goal in a run of five consecutive starts to secure all three points for Leeds United – but the striker says he was “fuming” not to score a second against Norwich City.

Getting on the end of a perfect cross from Dan James, 30-year-old Bamford powered a header into the far corner to score the only goal of the game against David Wagner’s side, who praised Leeds last night.

It was a proper striker’s goal, hanging in the air and planting the ball perfectly across Angus Gunn. The £10m Leeds striker is bang in form, confidence flowing. It comes after attempting an overhead kick.

But the one-time England international had a chance to double his and Leeds’ tally in the second half. Crysencio Summerville was played through by Junior Firpo out wide on the left flank, on 75 minutes.

He pulled the ball back for Bamford who from 14 yards, attempted to flash the ball towards goal with his left foot. His body position was wrong, possibly should have taken it with his right – as Phil Hay reported.

The ball flew off the striker’s laces and harmlessly wide of Gunn’s right-hand post, curling away from goal. A big chance, one that an in-form Bamford may have backed himself to do better with last night.

Speaking to Leeds United’s Matchday programme as per the club’s YouTube after the game, Bamford spoke of the goal he scored – but declared himself “fuming” at missing the chance to score a second.

“If I make the movement, especially with the ball coming from the right, when DJ looks to cross – he knows what my movement is – it’s worked. But to be honest, I’m fuming I didn’t score the second.”
