Manager’s comments, and Monday should convince Marsch to use unused Leeds man

Willy Gnonto is still awaiting his senior debut since joining Leeds United on deadline day – but comments from Roberto Mancini, and his goal on Monday, should convince boss Jesse Marsch to use Gnonto against Arsenal on Sunday.

Gnonto, 19, was the man to finally arrive at Elland Road on deadline day. The Italy wonderkid’s signing came after Leeds missed out on both Cody Gakpo – who is thriving at PSV – and then, Bamba Dieng, who failed a Nice medical.

Since, Gnonto has been overlooked by Marsch. He featured in the 6-2 win against Southampton for the 21’s, and then scored on Monday. A gorgeous touch in a crowded box, allowed Gnonto to blast Leeds to a 1-0 win over Sunderland.

In between those two outings, Gnonto played for Italy during the international break. He impressed in a cameo against England, before our latest signing then started in a 2-0 win over Hungary. He got the assist for Italy’s first goal.

So, among the goals for the 21’s, and impressing in Italy’s senior side. Mancini has also commented on his game time, as per Tribal Football: “Gnonto is a young kid, and he’s only just arrived. So maybe he will need time to settle in.”.

Mancini and Monday should convince Leeds boss Marsch to use Gnonto

Mancini’s comments come across as suggesting he is surprised Gnonto is yet to play. The impressive attacker was an unused sub against Aston Villa. Although, going down to 10 men would not have helped the youngster’s cause.

But against Crystal Palace, with Leeds lacking a spark in the final third and 2-1 down from 76 minutes. Gnonto would have been ideal. But Marsch chose to overlook him, turning to the likes of Mateusz Klich and Joe Gelhardt.

It is not something Marsch should consider lightly. He literally has an Italy international on the bench. There is a reason he has Italy caps. Arsenal are next at Elland Road on Sunday, they will need a spark to get a result out of the game.

So, against Arsenal, Gnonto will be on the bench. But if Leeds need a goal, then Gnonto has got to be a consideration. He deserves his senior bow. His goal against Monday, and Mancini’s comments, are proof of that. Marsch must listen.
