Leeds United came within touching distance of signing Harry Wilson last summer before Fulham pulled the plug on a proposed move.
Twelve months later, the Wales international is set to become available on a free transfer when his contract expires on June 30, and the case for finally bringing him to Elland Road looks stronger than ever.
Would you sign Harry Wilson next summer, when his contract ends? 🪄
He's still out of contract.
Leeds did not abandon their pursuit of Wilson. They missed out because Fulham changed their stance late in the window, ending what had looked like a realistic move to West Yorkshire.
Wilson is once again a realistic target and this time there is no transfer fee involved, giving Leeds the opportunity to revisit a move they were prepared to complete only a year ago, and Wilson was keen.
Gordon Strachan has summed up the opportunity perfectly
Former Leeds midfielder Gordon Strachan believes Wilson remains exactly the type of player the club should be looking at this summer, as quoted by Wales Online.
“Harry Wilson to Leeds United? There are 10 goals a season in there. I think he’d be a great signing,” said Strachan. Wilson’s recent Premier League output suggests that assessment is spot on.

Strachan doubled down on that view when he added: “He can score 10 goals a season in the Premier League and he’s free, that’s definitely something to be looked at. Absolutely.”
He also said: “He’s a guy who’s taken a while to find his feet. He wasn’t a superstar kid, but now he looks to be a real asset.”
The numbers back him up. Wilson finished the 2025-26 Premier League season with 10 goals and seven assists, while also contributing 39 chances created and eight big chances created.
Ethan Ampadu may already be helping Leeds’ cause
Wilson would not be arriving at a club full of strangers. He already shares a dressing room with Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, Daniel James and Karl Darlow through the Wales national team.
When asked about speaking to Wales teammates about Leeds, Ampadu said: “(I’m) trying to sell it to everyone,” before adding: “It’s a pretty easy sell. Everyone knows how special a place Leeds is.

“Whenever we get asked how our time is at Leeds, when we’re with Wales, we speak about it glowingly.” The Leeds captain’s comments to The Athletic will only encourage fans hoping to see Wilson join.
That existing connection should not be underestimated. Leeds already have a strong Welsh core and Wilson would walk into a dressing room filled with familiar faces.
This is a free transfer opportunity most clubs would consider
The attraction is not limited to Leeds. Wilson offers Premier League experience, international pedigree and elite set-piece quality without any transfer fee attached.
Daniel Farke can guide Leeds United into Europe by 2028 – DISCUSS 🪄
During 2025-26 he recorded six goals directly from free-kicks, 70 corners taken and 17 Premier League goal involvements. He is one of the most-dangerous players in the league from set-pieces.
Leeds have already shown a willingness to exploit the free-agent market, adding Lukas Nmecha before moving for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Wilson fits the same profile of a proven top-flight player, on a free.
Leeds wanted Wilson a year ago. Strachan thinks he can deliver goals, Ampadu is already talking up the club and the winger has just produced one of the best Premier League seasons of his career.
For a player available on a free transfer, this feels less like a gamble and more like an opportunity Leeds should be doing everything possible to take.
