Tony Dorigo heaps praise on Victor Orta for something he did in the summer

Tony Dorigo has applauded Leeds United sporting director Victor Orta in his Yorkshire Evening Post column, for the signing of Tyler Adams from RB Leipzig. The USA skipper is not only impressing for Leeds, but at the World Cup, too.

Adams, 23, has been excellent for Leeds since joining the club from Leipzig for a measly fee of just £20million. He has started every Premier League game he has been available for – missing only the 2-0 loss to Leicester at the King Power.

While he was sent off against Spurs, he has been superb for Leeds. Masterminding wins over Liverpool and Chelsea, no less. Now at the World Cup, he was given CBS Sports’ best rating of the USA players for his display against Wales.

Given his age, and his form for Leeds and USA, £20m looks like money well spent. Of course, he is a Jesse Marsch signing but the fee and getting a deal done, including convincing Adams with a 30-page powerpoint, is down to Orta.

“The £20m Leeds paid for him already looks like money very well spent. A big tick in Victor Orta’s win column. With the director of football role you’re not talking about a 100 per cent strike rate. It’s always going to be difficult.

“You look to get value and see what comes out at the other end. It’s a gamble because a question mark exists over a player’s ability to do it in the Premier League. Adams has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water.”

He has been immense for Leeds. There was understandable worry when Leeds sold Kalvin Phillips, not just among Leeds fans but from pundits, too. However, the signing of Adams has improved the defensive side of Phillips.

Marc Roca supplied the playmaking ability of Phillips. The duo’s combination, although two players, have come in for a combined fee of £30million. A £15million saving on Phillips’ overall fee. So, Orta does deserve huge praise for that.
