Surprise, as well as disappointment. Denmark have been knocked out of the World Cup when many expected them to potentially finish above France in Group C – it means, Leeds United star Rasmus Kristensen is set for an early return.
Kristensen is one of three Leeds players currently in Jesse Marsch’s squad that have been in Qatar, representing their countries. Dan James, too – but of course, he is on loan at Fulham. The United States have made it to the last 16.
That will see Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson take on The Netherlands on Sunday. But for Kristensen, it is not to be. Denmark had beaten France twice in the Nations League. They were tipped to potentially finish top of the group.
But Denmark have been awful at the World Cup. They drew their opening game against minnows Tunisia, and then lost to France. They had to beat Australia on Wednesday evening – but they suffered a 1-0 loss, Matt Leckie scoring.
Kristensen started and finished the draw against Tunisia, and came off late on against France – a 2-1 loss. Embarrassed by Kylian Mbappe, it got worse – hooked at half-time as Australia won 1-0. Denmark are out of the World Cup.

Denmark out: Leeds star Kristensen set for an early return
A woeful World Cup campaign for Denmark. Kristensen and his teammates were expected to be dark horses, but just one goal in three games – earning only a point – was far below expectation. Australia, though, very impressive.
They go through on six points having beaten Denmark and Tunisia, while Tunisia were admirable in defeat. Indeed, they secured four points – beating France on Wednesday evening. Didier Deschamps made 10 changes to his side.
So, Kristensen is set for an early return to Leeds and Jesse Marsch may see that as a small win. Leeds take on Manchester City on December 28 and it gives Kristensen a few more days than he might have had, to rest and prepare.
