Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Graham Smyth has told a Q&A session that he “would be astounded” if the agent of Willy Gnonto is not touting the Leeds United gem to Serie A clubs this summer – in the probable event of relegation.

Gnonto, 19, has endeared himself to the Leeds fans as a favourite since joining the club from Zurich. He has clocked up 27 senior outings since moving to Elland Road from Zurich, having a hand in eight goals – scoring four himself.

The 10-time Italy star is renowned for his aggression, his tenacity, his ability to go past players and of course, goals at Old Trafford against Manchester United – or his Paolo Di Canio-like scissor kick against Cardiff City in the FA Cup.

Plenty of clubs are said to be looking at Gnonto. Calcio Web reported this week that Sassuolo had an agreement to sign Gnonto, in place. Smyth says he would be stunned if the agent of Gnonto is not touting him to Serie A sides.

“Leeds say that in the event of relegation they will try their damnedest to keep Gnonto. As for Gnonto, if his agent is not sounding out Serie A clubs I would be astounded,” Smyth told his Q&A session on the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Gnonto is a wonderful talent and deserves, already at this early stage, to be playing regularly for a top-tier club. If Leeds stay up and produce a near-miracle on Saturday, you would expect him to remain at Elland Road this summer.

But if Leeds go down, there will be plenty of clubs all over Europe – from relegation-threatened, to mid-table, to the clubs fighting for Europe – interested in Gnonto. What is key for Gnonto, is picking a club where he’s first choice.
