Luke Ayling’s disappointing form continued at the weekend. Once considered one of Leeds’ most inspired signings of recent times, Ayling is now struggling to hold onto his spot in Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Jamie Shackleton is not naturally a right-back. And yet, there are a growing number of fans who would prefer to see the youngster given a chance ahead of Ayling.
Shackleton has been a revelation this term. His performances have rarely been a disappointment, and his versatility looks set to ensure that he will be a key man for several years to come.
If he is used against Swansea this Wednesday, he would probably do well. But perhaps Bielsa should also consider a much more left-field option.
Like Ayling, Jack Harrison is leaving Bielsa with issues to consider. Despite some superb moments, the winger has struggled for consistency this term.
On his day, he looks unplayable. But those days have been too infrequent this term.
But having got some superb performances from Gjanni Alioski after moving the winger to left-back, perhaps Bielsa should replicate that move with Harrison.
Of course, Alioski had prior experience of playing as a full-back. But with Leeds looking to be on the front foot, Harrison would be able to focus more on matters further up the pitch rather than defending.
Harrison could provide the threat that Ayling has struggled to offer lately. It would be a roll of the dice. But perhaps it could be an inspired way to address two issues currently leaving Bielsa with plenty to ponder.
