Sky Sports report that Jack Harrison is set to sign a new deal at Leeds United after travelling to Leicester City to have a medical – with the story claiming a phone call with Harrison from the Leeds board saw them match Leicester’s offer.

Harrison, 26, has been in excellent form in January – scoring once and laying on four assists in five games in the last month. But his contract ends in 18 months and Leicester were showing interest. Leeds wanted a fee of £25million.

Now, reports have emerged saying that Harrison had in fact travelled to Leicester and even started a medical. Leeds and Leicester had not agreed a fee but in order to beat the deadline, Harrison agreed a wage and started a medical.

But The Athletic reported that Leeds pulled a u-turn and blocked a move. Harrison now returns to Elland Road, and a new deal is in the offing. That is according to Sky Sports, who state that Leeds spoke to Harrison on the phone.

They state that Leeds rang Harrison while he was at Leicester. They decided that they would be willing to match the offer on the table for Harrison – and it saw him choose Leeds. Now, Sky say a new deal will arrive in the ‘coming weeks’.

It is a bizarre turn of events. While the interest in Harrison has been constant – with Newcastle and Tottenham recently linked – not many had known Harrison was at Leicester. Indeed, the move was a lot closer than many had believed.

But Leeds made the right decision. Yes, Harrison’s form can go up and down but he has shown in the last month is proof that Leeds need to keep him. A new deal is a must. It should have been done before the January window.
