The Athletic claim that Rangers suffering defeat in the Champions League qualifying stages is likely to cause the sales of a number of key players. The report states that Rangers winger Ryan Kent remains an option for Leeds United. Defeat to Malmo could see Leeds go back in for Rangers star Kent.
Kent, 24, has been linked with Leeds ever since regaining promotion to the Premier League. The ex-Liverpool star had a hand in 28 goals in during his 52 league and cup appearances in 2020-21. This season, he has endured a slow start but still has two assists in four games for Steven Gerrard’s side.
On Tuesday night, Rangers were tasked with beating Malmo – having lost the first leg in Sweden 2-1. Alfredo Morelos opened the scoring and Malmo went down to 10 men – it looked good. But Antonio Colak scored a quick-fire brace and Rangers failed to recover. Europa League is now likely, again.
Why do Rangers have to sell the likes of Leeds target Kent?
But having spent a lot of money during his tenure at Rangers, the Gers are forecasted to lost £14.4million this year – based on Europa League qualification. That is a hefty loss – Champions League group stages would have made up for it. But now, they might have to sell a couple of players.
The report name drops Kent and Finland international Glen Kamara as possible players that could depart – while stating Leeds are keen. A recent report says Rangers rate Kent at £18million – but that Gerrard is trying to keep Kent by offering him a new deal. Now, he might not have that choice.
If Leeds were to offer a decent fee for Kent this summer, Rangers might be forced into accepting a deal.
