Victor Orta has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that he was relieved at finally luring Dan James to Leeds – and almost thanks Cristiano Ronaldo.
James, 23, completed a £25million move to Leeds on Tuesday. It comes two and a half years after almost joining us from Swansea in January 2019.
Of course, we all remember James picking the 21 shirt, posing for photos and passing a medical. But Swansea moved the goalposts at the last minute.
Ronaldo’s arrival at Manchester United had pushed James down the pecking order at Old Trafford. The move allowed Leeds to get the Wales ace.
Orta spoke about Ronaldo allowing James to join Leeds, and his relief at finally getting a deal over the line for the ex-Swansea star.
” personally am really happy because the situation of the winger, in a moment I felt it would be difficult but at the last moment,” Orta said.
“Like with Rennes and Raphinha when it happened so quickly, the Ronaldo deal helped us finish a goal that was two and a half years in the making.”
Orta on James: Leeds have finally added perfect Bielsa star
He is the perfect Bielsa player. If you imagine the opposition in possession, in their own half – you expect the Leeds attackers to be pressing high.
To be able to do that continuously, like Raphinha and Jack Harrison do, you have to incredibly quick but also hard-working and tactically adept.
James is another example of that. But he has more experience than Harrison and Raphinha in the Premier League – and is much quicker.
While he has been in and out of Manchester United’s side in the Premier League, James is a brilliant option. But he is also perfect for Bielsa.
