Leeds United are reportedly keen to sign a new left-back this summer as Gjanni Alioski’s contract looks set to expire come the end of June. It will see Alioski enter the European Championships this summer as a Leeds player, and come out of it as a free agent – that is, of course, if he has not signed a new Leeds deal, or a deal with his next club.
He needs replacing, with Leeds already somewhat in need of a left-sided defender. Stuart Dallas has shown in recent weeks that he is much more effective in the middle of the park, replacing Mateusz Klich. Leif Davis is on the fringes, but is hardly seen as the long-term answer to the left-back slot. Here are three left-sided defenders that have been linked, with three being the worst option and the one, being the best.
3. Yasser Larouci, Liverpool
The Mirror have reported over the weekend that Marcelo Bielsa is still keeping tabs on Larouci, 20, having been linked last summer. Available on a free, Larouci looks as though he will leave Liverpool for nothing this summer – but the Reds will require a compensation fee as he is under the age of 23. He has played twice for Liverpool’s senior side, but is still unproven. Such a move would be no improvement on Davis.
2. Romain Perraud, Brest
The Athletic state that Leeds like the look of Perraud, who has had a hand in eight goals during his 27 Ligue 1 outings for the top-tier French side this season. Indeed, Leeds have had success buying from France in recent seasons – spending little over £20million to get both Illan Meslier (Lorient) and Raphinha (Rennes). His form is certainly impressive, and would represent a massive improvement on Larouci.
1. Patrick van Aanholt, Crystal Palace
There is little difference between Perraud. The main one, is that Perraud is likely to cost the best part of £20million or even more – while 12-time Netherlands international van Aanholt will not cost a penny. Like Larouci and Alioski, he is out of contract this summer – and Leeds can nab a player who has goals, assists and more than 200 Premier League appearances to his name already. Yes, he is 31 this summer, but for a couple of seasons, he would be a stunning signing. Ideally, getting both van Aanholt and Perraud would be perfect. The Mirror state Leeds are keen on the £55,000-a-week ace (Spotrac).
