Sunday’s FA Cup defeat was a horrific result. There were hardly any positives in the 3-0 defeat to League Two side Crawley Town – another example of Leeds United struggling in cup competitions under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa – but there was perhaps one good performance among a bunch of bad ones, in the form of Ian Poveda.
Poveda, 20, was handed his 15th appearances for Leeds in all competitions since joining the club from Manchester City. He started in a strong-looking Leeds side that also included Pablo Hernandez, Helder Costa and Rodrigo. Leeds did dominate during the first half, and although they failed to score, they certainly did enjoy the better moments of play.
Poveda was central to that. The England Under-20 international showed some flashes of brilliance from the flanks, getting past players on numerous occasions, having shots at goal and playing balls in to Rodrigo, Hernandez and others in dangerous areas. It goes without saying that his silky footwork was more than on show – and one moment in particular caught the eye.
Picking the ball up on the left side of the penalty area, Poveda perfected an incredibly difficult skill in the form of a flip flap – not only did he go past his man, but he nutmegged the Crawley defender.
Poveda has been made to wait for game time this season. A regular in the Premier League 2 side, the former Manchester City man has had to tend with enormous competition from Jack Harrison, Raphinha, Helder Costa, Stuart Dallas, Gjanni Alioski and veteran Pablo Hernandez. But his skillset might have caught the eye.
Certainly it did on Instagram. Such was the moment of brilliance, he earned praise on Instagram from Leeds attacker Tyler Roberts as well as ex-City teammate Jadon Sancho – who of course now plays for England and Borussia Dortmund.
