Alan Shearer has named Illan Meslier in his Premier League Team of the Week, claiming that the Frenchman made a string of brilliant saves in Leeds United’s win over Liverpool.
Leeds, of course, ended their long wait for a win in some style on Saturday. Crysencio Summerville poked home an 89th minute winner at Anfield to send the away end into a frenzy.
A number of Leeds players were outstanding on the night. Rasmus Kristensen perhaps had his best game for the Whites. Tyler Adams was colossal in the middle of the park.
Illan Meslier brilliant in Leeds win
Meanwhile, Liverpool could not handle Brenden Aaronson. And Summerville showed why Jesse Marsch has put his faith in him over the last few weeks.
But it was Meslier who was named player of the match. The goalkeeper made a number of superb stops to keep the home side at bay. And his performance prompted Shearer to name the 22-year-old in his Team of the Week.
“Man of the match. An array of brilliant saves set his side on the way to victory at Liverpool,” he told the Premier League website.
Meslier was undoubtedly brilliant on Merseyside. He stepped up whenever called upon. And some of the saves and interventions he made were world-class.
But to suggest that Meslier’s performance was the difference between the two sides would be unfair. Leeds would have known that they would need to ride their luck. And Meslier was always going to need to produce a huge performance.
But several of his teammates were outstanding also. As well as the names already mentioned, the likes of Robin Koch, Pascal Struijk and Marc Roca were superb.
Meslier has stepped up again this season. Like many, he had a really tough year last term. And it did appear that his confidence took a real hit.
However, he has already produced a number of big displays this time around. He looks to be back to his best. And he absolutely deserves all of the plaudits coming his way.
