Exclusive: Nigel Martyn believes Crystal Palace left-back would be a good signing for Leeds United

Nigel Martyn has told LeedsUnited.News that he thinks Crystal Palace left-back Patrick van Aanholt would be a good signing for Leeds United amid reports the Dutchman is being linked with a move to Elland Road on a free transfer – but the Leeds icon did admit that he was not impressed with van Aanholt’s performance earlier this week, during a draw with Everton.

Gjanni Alioski, 29, is expected to leave Leeds this summer on a free transfer. The North Macedonia ace is out of contract in June – he will enter this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament still contracted to Leeds, but when the tournament finishes, that contract will have expired. Galatasaray, a club with an enormous rivalry with Leeds, are said to be interested in Alioski.

Stuart Dallas continues to shine in the middle of the park, meaning the Whites need a left-back. Plenty have been linked, with Brest defender Romain Perraud supposedly an option – but The Mirror say Palace’s van Aanholt is an option for Leeds. The ex-Chelsea left-back is in a similar position to that of Alioski, with his contract at Palace due to come to an end.

Though he does earn quite a hefty wage in £55,000 a week (Spotrac), 30-year-old van Aanholt does boast enormous experience – which has come in the Premier League. The left-back has now clocked up a whopping 210 appearances in England’s top flight – scoring a goal at a ratio of one evry 10 games, with 21 league goals to his name. He also has 15 assists.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

A 12-time Netherlands international, van Aanholt does turn 31 in August but on a free transfer – it is difficult to overlook the former Chelsea man. Asked whether van Aanholt would be a good signing for Leeds, ex-Palace goalkeeper and Leeds icon Martyn believes he would be a solid signing – even though he was not impressed earlier this week when Palace drew with another of his old teams Everton, 1-1.

“I have seen him play for Palace really well – but against Everton he was average,” Martyn told LeedsUnited.News, when asked about the possibility of van Aanholt in a Leeds shirt. “But I have seen him play really well for Palace, he scores the odd goal and links up well with [Wilfried] Zaha. He is looking to move from Palace.

“That is a possibility, if Alioski – he’s been entertaining if nothing else, and does quite well on occasion. But he wants his contract to run out and get a good pay day somewhere, you can’t blame him. Van Aanholt is not a bad full-back, but I wasn’t impressed with him against Everton. They’ll have watched him – he will certainly prefer playing at Elland Road than Selhurst Park, to play football. Bobbly surface!”
